Job Announcement: Director of Sustainable Community Programs

Position Description: The Director of Sustainable Community Programs manages all aspects of the Sustainable Communities Program, The Audubon Cooperative  Sanctuary Program for Business,  and Green Neighborhoods Program. The position is part of a collaborative team of dedicated staff members and directly engages a wide range of potential stakeholders (municipal leaders, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, property owners’ associations, and private sector firms, land and property owners, etc.).  The Director reports directly to the Executive Director to meet annual member growth, retention, and service goals.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Programs & Member Services

  • Provide leadership to develop, maintain, and advance SCP, ACSP for Business and GN programs, while providing excellent and timely services to our members.
  • Assist Sustainable Communities, ACSP for Business, and Green Neighborhoods member organizations in the development of management plans, sustainability indicators,  and other technical documents required as a component of the Audubon International’s rigorous certification process.
  • Serve members via requests for information through timely in-person, written, telephone, and email communication.
  • Conduct periodic site visits to assist members with ongoing environmental planning and management activities.
  • Cooperate with Audubon International’s network of partners to ensure that Sustainable Communities, ACSP for Business,  and Green Neighborhoods program materials are up-to-date and being disseminated to appropriate audiences.

Outreach & Education

  • Develop and conduct seminars, presentations, and informational briefings to help educate Sustainable Communities, ASCP for Business, and Green Neighborhoods members (active and prospective) about the natural environment, benefits of sustainable natural resource management, sustainability practices, and the efficacy of Audubon International’s approach to environmental stewardship and certification process.
  • Promote all Audubon International programs via stakeholder meetings, media interviews, newsletters, and participation in various industry and environmental working groups.
  • Lead in the development of new target groups for membership and the development of relationships with other public and private sector organizations interested in partnering with Audubon International in the delivery of the SC , ACSP for Business, and GN programs.
  • Represent AI at appropriate professional society and industry meetings, i.e., APA
  • Develop blog entries for the AI website and content for social media posts
  • In coordination with appropriate AI Staff, develop SCP/Businesss/GN-related press releases and articles for Stewardship News

Program Marketing and Membership Recruitment

  • Solicit membership for the SCP, ACSP for Business and GN programs
  • Engage contracts for services related to the SC, ACSP for Business, and GN programs
  • As needed, cross promote Audubon International programs  (i.e. , ACSP for Golf, Green Lodging, Signature and Classic)


  • Develop and implement yearly goals, objectives, strategies, and budget proposals for the Sustainable Communities, ACSP for Business, and Green Neighborhoods programs in conjunction with other programs being implemented by the organization.
  • Maintain up-to-date information in the organization’s comprehensive member database
  • Participate in organization- and program-level strategic planning efforts


  • A bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study (i.e., town land use/city planning, human ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, sustainability science) with at least 2-3 years of relevant and related professional experience, OR a master's / certificate degree in an appropriate field of study with 1-2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Must be dedicated to educating and encouraging urban planning professionals, municipal leadership and staff, citizens, businesses, and others to become actively involved in environmental stewardship projects
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and experience working with diverse constituencies and demographics
  • Ability to excel both by working independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong technical and persuasive writing skills
  • Computer proficiency (i.e., Microsoft Office suite, database management, internet-based research, professional applications of social media).
  • Knowledge and/or professional experience in  planning, outreach, community sustainability practices, and meeting facilitation is desired
  • Pre-existing professional connections in the housing development , planning or public administration industries is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with environmental and ecosystem science (particularly of North America)
  • Occasional overnight travel required.

Additional Requirements: 

The person in this position must be able to:

  • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Regularly ascends/descends stairs to access office equipment.
  • Frequently communicate with members and interested parties who have inquiries, and exchange accurate information in these situations.
